Just came across this nice little programme that looks in the proc directory to find the progress of certain tasks such as the cp or rsync command.

It describes its self as:

This tool can be described as a Tiny, Dirty, Linux-and-OSX-Only C command that looks for coreutils basic commands (cp, mv, dd, tar, gzip/gunzip, cat, etc.) currently running on your system and displays the percentage of copied data. It can also show estimated time and throughput, and provides a "top-like" mode (monitoring).

To install from ubuntu enter the following command:

sudo apt install progress

To monitor all coreutils commands in a window enter:

watch progress -q
